Throughout the ages man has searched for the “fountain of youth”-- that magic water that would keep one young and beautiful forever. Of course through much peril and disappointment man has found that to be a myth. There is no potion that can keep you young and beautiful forever. There are however characteristics and qualities that you can acquire and adopt that will make and keep you beautiful no matter what age you are. I would like to explore five: Wonder, Kindness, Humor, Love, and Godliness. Whenever you possess these characteristics and qualities you are beautiful from the inside out; and it doesn’t matter if you are one or one hundred and one, you are beautiful!

Wonder is a quality that we see in babies and young children as they are growing and experiencing life outside the womb for the first time. I have a granddaughter, Tayla who amazes me every day as I watch her grow and explore everything with wide eyes and a ready smile. She is so beautiful! Not just her physical attributes, but her zest for life. She can go back to the same thing that fascinates her over and over again and touch, feel, and ultimately attempt to eat the object of her interest. She was born with inherent wonder. To a certain extent, some more than others, we all are. We are born with an instinct to explore and to learn and everything is a wonder. As we grow older, our experiences teach us to become more and more closed to the world around us. We can sometimes get a cynical attitude that says, been there, done that, and bought the t-shirt. Even as Disciples of Christ, we can become immune to the things of God. We get desensitized by Hollywood movies and we look for the spectacular to equate with the supernatural and it becomes harder and harder to be open to the everyday wonders of God. Wonder is however a quality that we should never lose no matter what age. Wonder looks beautiful when it is genuine. When you are genuinely surprised and amazed with the freshness of life in the Holy Spirit it causes your eyes to sparkle and it produces a childlike expression that is beautiful indeed!

Kindness is a beautiful quality that looks good on anyone. When you look into kind eyes and a kind expression especially when you are in need of some type of assistance or if you have just had a rough day, it really makes the person wearing kindness look very beautiful. Kindness is essentially having a sympathetic or helpful nature and being affectionate, loving, forbearing, and gentle. You can tell the truth and still be kind. It is not what you say but the words you choose to use to say it and therefore how you say it. The Bible states that our words should be seasoned with salt and full of grace (Colossians 4:6). Ultimately kindness is seen by our actions. It’s not just words. It is doing good things for others when we have the opportunity. It is going that extra mile and not complaining. To be kind is to be beautiful no matter how old you are!

Humor- The most important thing that one can do in order to remain beautiful is to laugh. A good sense of humor will make up for bad hair days, pimples, and bloating, that is if you don’t take yourself too seriously. When you don’t look or feel your best look for the humor in your situation. Sometimes just looking in the mirror and seeing how silly you look will cause you to laugh at yourself! It is good to be able to laugh and create laughter in others. That is a beautiful quality especially in today’s world with so much bad news and depressing things going on. In order to have humor, you must look for it. Look for the absurd in everyday life and laugh. Point it out to others so they can laugh as well. Be able to laugh at yourself but don’t make a practice of laughing at others. Laugh with others. There is a saying that says laugh and the whole world will laugh with you.

Don't Be A Taker!

Takers- these are the people who see everyone as an opportunity for them to prosper or get something from. People are not seen as people by takers, they are seen as objects to meet their needs. You will be able to spot a taker by listening to their conversation. They primarily talk to you in such a way as to connect with a need that you have and then promise to help to fulfill that need for a fee. It will always cost you something and the problem is they do not always deliver.

Which brings me to my next point about takers, they lie. Listen for inconsistencies in their speech and actions. It can be as small as promising to call you when you realize they have a pattern of saying, “I will call you later today.”.......

MOVING FROM HOPE TO MANIFESTATION

Hebrew 11:1 “Faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen.”

Based upon my book, “As Long As There Is Breath In Your Body, There Is Hope!”

When moving from hope to manifestation it is going to take Resilience- (the ability to bounce back, to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change)

During this season many need to bounce back from loss; financial, relational, health, death of loved ones, divorce, and addictions to drugs, alcohol, food, sex, etc. Resilience comes from inside of you through your relationship with God by the Holy Spirit.

Peace, Love, Joy, Divine Health/Healing and Deliverance are the Children’s bread and we shall not live by natural bread alone, but by every Word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick but when desire comes it is a tree of life.” Proverbs 13:12

Desire is a wish, longing of one’s heart – things desired, object of desire.

Three Key Ingredients that you need in order for your Hope to move to Manifestation:

Delighting in the Lord!

Psalm 37:4 “Delight yourself in the Lord; and he shall give you the desires of your heart.” Delight in Hebrew means – to be soft, be delicate, and be dainty, to be delicate, be pampered, and to be happy about, take exquisite delight!

Waiting on the Lord!

Isaiah 40:31 “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength – they shall mount up with wings like eagles, run and not be weary, walk and not faint.”

Embracing the Light of Truth!

St. John 16:13 “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.”

Hope is essentially “pregnant expectation” so I ask you; what is your “Baby of Hope” that you are believing God to give birth to this season?

Visions, Promises, and Dreams will be fulfilled as you are Delighting, Waiting and Embracing the Holy Spirit to lead and guide you through this season to Recover, Restore, and Regain everything that you may have lost!!

“ ‘Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done

on earth as it is in heaven.”

Standing on Power!

"That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God." I Corinthians 2:5

Where does your faith stand? Are you depending upon your abilities, your connections, your intellect, or your wisdom in order to be successful in life? We can do self-inventory to determine what and who we are depending upon by looking at what we are afraid of. What do you fear? Most fear is based upon the threat of loss. What are you afraid of losing? Is it a job, a relationship, your health, your mind, your money, or your position or title? Most Christians would loudly declare, "I have no fear!" but is that really true? Because fear cancels out faith and often times we do not have faith because there is too much fear. The fear is present because we have inadvertently put our faith in something else other than the power of God.

When you place your faith in God's power you realize that no matter what the doctor's report says or the financial report or bank account states, or what your friends and families do; you know that your God is able. He has all power and He can move mountains on your behalf and turn situations around in the blink of an eye. You can't figure God out or serve Him with your intellect. You must trust Him and learn to take Him at His word because His word will never fail!

Three Points to Remember:

Fear cancels out Faith!
God is Omnipotent! (He has all power)
Have Faith in God's Power!

Five Steps to Deal with Change!

I am amazed at how so many times even when we know what to expect and talk about what will happen, and even plan for certain events, that when they take place we respond predictably counterproductive to what we know is the best response. Upon careful examination and pondering about such matters I have come to the conclusion that:

We tend to be creatures of habits! In other words we often respond based upon what we did in the past when faced with similar crises or trying circumstances. We revert back to old behavior because it is familiar and we already have a frame of reference for it even if it is not good.
It is easier to do what we've always done! Yes it takes no new skill set to react the way we always reacted in the past. It takes no effort, we can just react and not Act based upon careful thought and examination.
If others are involved then nine times out of ten they will trigger a response based upon someone from our past. Oftentimes, we use transference and put people into roles of people from our past thus creating a sure cycle of predictable outcomes.

I am sure you are familiar with the saying that "insanity is doing what you have always done and expecting different results." Let's stop the madness by adopting the following steps to dealing with change.

Five Steps to Deal with Change:

Look at each new event as an opportunity to learn!
Act and not React to events and circumstances!
Take time to Pray and Plan your Response or Action!
Don't always go for the Familiar or Predictable!
Use your Bible as a Road Map! (W.W.J.D., What Would Jesus Do!)

It Is Time!

There are seasons in our lives when opportunities come before us and it is up to us to seize them and not wait and try to analyze or rationalize what is presented. It is important to first of all see the blessing and then have the fortitude to lay hold of it. So many times we miss out on what God has prepared for us because we do not recognize it as a blessing from God. When Jesus came to planet earth He chose an earth suit that many did not recognize as the Son of God. They had preconceived ideas as to what the Messiah was going to look like and how He was going to come. When Jesus came to such a humble maid servant as Mary and was born in such a humble place as a manger and came from such a humble town as Nazareth, many people did not receive Him as God. They MISSED their day of visitation! We read that and shake our heads in disdain but how many times do we do the exact same thing?

I am convinced that this is the Time that God is releasing great opportunities and blessings to those who are Aware and Awake. Remember they may come in packages that are different from what you are looking for or are expecting.

Five ways to help discern the Seasons of Blessings that God has in store for YOU:

Look through Eyes of Faith!
Don't dismiss anything before thoroughly praying and seeking God!
Learn to get out of your Comfort Zone!
Stop Struggling and Take a Deep Breath and Relax!
Remember that God comes in very Unexpected Ways and does Great and Unexpected things for those who dare to Believe!

It is time to "Dream Again" and allow those dreams to come into fruition. In my poem "Dream Again" I challenge you to dream and then get up and make those dreams come true!

DREAM AGAIN

I had a dream last night, but it didn’t last long;

In the dream, I was singing a song

About how in life things can go wrong;

But even then there is a chance to go on.

I had a dream last night about what love looks like,

And in the dream I thought about the plight of men and women

Caught up in a daze, purple haze, eyes all glazed, looking half crazed,

Walking and wandering through life unphased by all of the chaos and sin all around,

looking for love in a world turned upside down.

I had a dream last night, but something had changed--

The tables had turned, and inside my head burned with the awareness and knowledge that life is for living and love is for loving and songs are for singing; and in the midst of it all my alarm clock started ringing.

I arose from my bed, shook my head, and thought about the things that I had reaped,

and then it dawned on me that I wasn’t really asleep!

For the first time in my life my eyes were wide open, and I was aware and awake to the things that make life worth living and time worth giving to the things that bring release and offer peace.

So whether awake or asleep, dream of a life filled with songs for the soul

and love that makes whole whatever is broken.

Dream of hope and joy for better days ahead;

And when you dream, get out of your bed and bring to reality the things that were said!

Faith Not Magical Thinking!

This is why I speak to them in parables: “Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.” In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: “You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.” But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.

Matthew 13:13-16

Oftentimes the reason why we do not "see" or "hear" is because we are so caught up in Hollywood, magical thinking instead of the the true work of believing and having Faith in God. As a result we begin to view God as some kind of Genie in a bottle just waiting for us to rub it and say the magical words of faith in order for all of our dreams to come true. I would challenge you to do self inventory and determine whether subconsciously you have bought into fairy tale beliefs of: "happy ever-after"; "knight in shining armor"; "I will be discovered"; "I will be given wealth and riches or fame and fortune." These are just a few of the themes that have shaped our culture and crossed over into our walk and relationship with God. Many times our frustration is based upon what we perceive to be true and not the reality of the Spirit of Truth who leads us and guides us into all truth. Blessed are the eyes and ears that are open to the Spirit of Faith that speaks those things that be not as though they were with assurance and understanding that Faith without works is dead. It's not magical thinking but solid foundational principles of Faith and Life in the Spirit that will bring the results that we desire, the results that Jesus came for us to obtain. Once we are open to the truth we receive it in our hearts and walk in it, then we can experience "life and that more abundantly!"

Pray this prayer with me: "Father God please open my eyes and ears to the truth of your Son Jesus Christ and the ways of the Spirit of Truth and lead me and guide me into my place of purpose and destiny so that I might obtain everything that pertains to life and Godliness in Jesus Name, Amen!

The Beauty of Wisdom

(excerpt from You Are Beautiful)

The Bible states in Proverbs 31:30, “Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised (KJV). In this passage, the Hebrew word for “vain” is hebel and it means “vapour, breath.” Beauty is like a vapor or breath that is fleeting and is here today and gone tomorrow. The fear of the Lord, however, is the beginning of wisdom (Psalm 111:10); and that is what brings praise, not beauty alone. Wisdom is learning to reverence and honor the Lord in all our ways. Wisdom causes one to look beautiful. The Book of Ecclesiastes 8:1 states, “Who is like the wise man? Who knows the explanation of things? Wisdom brightens a man’s face and changes its hard appearance (NIV). Wisdom will take the hard edge off of your appearance. That is powerful!

My prayer to the Lord for this Christmas is that you receive Beautiful Wisdom to Navigate through the tough terrain of life. I pray that you will be able to make sense of the senseless and to strategically map out a plan to reach your highest potential.

May Beautiful Wisdom Engulf, Embrace and Enhance every aspect of your life! In Jesus Name, Amen!

Three points that I believe are essential in receiving and walking in Wisdom:

Honor the Lord in everything!
Remember that the Lord uses the foolish things of the world to confound the wise!
Fasting & Praying in order to hear the voice of the Lord and receive direction!

I am often reminded of how it eludes those who think it is hidden.

When truth be told, it is all around us waiting to be uncovered and

discovered from within.

The beauty within cannot be hidden. Although circumstances

surrounds us, just as the evergreens are tempting to take
over the foliage, in the midst of it all, the beauty of
the pink flowers commanded room. Notice how your eyes are
drawn to the beauty of the pink flowers...almost leaving the
evergreens (circumstances) unnoticed.

The issue of Fat Talk is something that Operation Beautiful takes very seriously. As Jillian Michaels said,"Fat talk is transcending…. It affects your reality and damages you professionally, personally, and physically."

Don’t compare your body to others.
Appreciate your body for what it can do.
Turn a negative into a positive. Instead of "I’m stocky," try "I’m strong!"
Never Fat Talk in front of your kids or friends.
This section of the Fat Talk discussion is dedicated to the statement, "I feel so fat."
How many times have you eaten something and then said, "Ugh. I feel so fat"? This is completely hyperbolic reaction to overindulging. First of all, even skinny women who aren’t "fat’ say it. Secondly, there’s no way one meal or one dessert can suddenly make you "fat." So, what do we really mean when we say, "I’m so fat"? We actually mean that we are FULL WITH AN EMOTION. Oftentimes, it’s shame. Or sadness. Or fear. Why do we express our inner turmoil by hating our bodies? Because that’s what Fat Talk and society tells us to do. Don’t admit you’re scared, just feel fat! Don’t admit you’re lonely or depressed, you’re just fat! We can deal with ugliness, we cannot deal with weakness. The next time you feel the urge to say, "I’m so fat," think about what you REALLY mean. By berating your body, you aren’t doing any favors. But by honoring your emotions, you’re living a happier, more honest lifeIf only one thing about this discussion about Fat Talk resonates with you, remember this: When you feel guilty about food, you are experiencing distorted thinking.

I’m not saying that means you have an eating disorder. I’m just saying that feeling guilty — raw, consuming, upsetting GUILT — is not a normal, healthy reaction to eating and is thus distorted. I think it’s important to recognize when our thinking is distorted, as the way we view ourselves has a big impact on our lot in life. All women experience guilt with food to some degree. I know I used to feel a really guilty if I drank two beers and ate a few slices of pizza. Or a big dessert. Sometimes, it didn’t even have to be a calorie-heavy meal to trigger the guilt. I’d have a bigger breakfast than normal, and I would fret that I’d "blown it" for the day or that I’d "given into temptation." Guilt is internal Fat Talk. It is shaming yourself for not meeting a perfectionist ideal that is unattainable and determined by the rigid standards our society has created! If you wouldn’t say it out loud to a friend, why would you say it to yourself?

Maybe right now you’re thinking: "But a little guilt can be a GOOD thing!" or "Guilt is a normal reaction to indulging!" But, if guilt was healthy or "normal," it would be PRODUCTIVE and it would make you HAPPY. Do you find yourself feeling guilty over food a lot? Well, then — you’re repeating the same actions over and over again, and clearly… Guilt isn’t productive, it doesn’t work, and it only serves to lower your self -esteem. Guilt is a waste of time and takes away from productive things you could be doing with your time — meditating, studying, sleeping, calling your friends on the phone, and more.

You aren’t going to gain weight from one dessert.
You aren’t a bad person for enjoying dinner.
You aren’t weak because you were hungrier than normal.

How do you stop guilt? It’s so much harder to stop than Fat Talk — after all, we verbalize Fat Talk to others and it’s easier to "catch" ourselves in conversation. Guilt, on the other hand, is this weird, creeping feeling that takes over you, ruins your day, and triggers the blues. I would say I cut down on my guilt thinking by about 90%, which I consider to be a big accomplishment. I stopped guilting myself by really thinking about my eating in the grand scheme of life. Did that pizza make me gain weight? No. Did it actually hurt my health in any measurable way that I ate a bunch of French fries? No. Am I an awesome friend and hard worker who is so much more than the food she eats? Of course!

If there is something about your lifestyle that you want to change, be proactive and CHANGE IT. Guilting yourself about it does not work. Taking action to move onwards and upwards does. Every setback is an opportunity to learn, grow, and improve.

About Danny Glover
Danny Glover is the dean of African American character actors. Though he has never managed to break through into stardom as has character-lead Morgan Freeman, he remains one of the top character actors working in cinema, constantly in demand, after almost thirty years since making his movie debut in a bit part in the 1979 Clint Eastwood potboiler Escape from Alcatraz (1979). Glover also has established a reputation as an outspoken political progressive, appearing in such productions as the stage production of Howard Zinn's "Voices from A People's History of the United States" and lending his voice to the aspirations of black folk in Africa and the Americas.

Danny Glover was the son of postal workers. The young Danny likely imbibed his taste for political activism from his parents, both of whom were active members of the NAACP. The family moved to San Francisco, where Danny attended George Washington High School. While a teenager, Danny developed epilepsy, which he learned to control by a form of self-hypnosis. (The epileptic seizures stopped after the age of 35.)

While matriculating at SFSC, Glover was a member of the Black Students Union, a group that was instrumental in brining an ethnic studies department to the college by staging a five-month-long student strike. The establishment of the Ethnic Studies Department made SFSC the first American university which such an academic program. Glover has remained committed to progressive causes, and is not afraid, as an actor, to appear in film or stage in works that promote a progressive agenda.

After graduating from high school, Glover attended American University in Washington, D.C. before returning to the Bay Area to attend San Francisco State College (now University). It was at SFSC that he met the woman who was to become his wife, Asake Bomani. The couple were married in 1975, and Glover got a job as a San Francisco city government bureaucrat.

Glover enrolled in the Black Actors Workshop at San Francisco's American Conservatory Theater when he was in his late 20s. The Conservatory, one of the premier regional theaters in America, also launched Annette Benning and other actors. Glover received further training at Jean Shelton's Actors Lab in San Francisco. Glover eventually quit his government job and began a life in the theater, moving to Los Angeles.

Glover made his Broadway debut in 1982, playing Willie in Athol Fugard's play about South African apartheid "Master Harold...and the boys," for which he won a Theatre World Award. (Twenty-one years later, he returned to Broadway for the revival of the play, playing Sam.) By the mid-1980s, the 6'3" Glover established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the ranks of talented character actors, appearing in Places in the Heart (1984), Silverado (1985), Witness (1985) and The Color Purple (1985). "Witness", where he played a corrupt police detective, made Glover a marketable commodity in Hollywood, whereas "The Color Purple" established his bona fides as a talented actor. He had arrived.

Glover's on-screen persona is one of a ballsy man who is not to be trifled with. Of all the character actors who have plied their trade in the movies, he is arguably the most militant on-screen presence since the legendary James Cagney. Like Cagney, Glover has a chip on his shoulder, though he is more wary than challenging of those who would try to knock it off.

He won the first of his four Emmy nominations as an actor (he also has a Daytime Emmy nomination as a director) for his portrayal of Nelson Mandela (1987) (TV). Arguably, he is best known for his role as Los Angeles police detective Roger Muztagh in the Lethal Weapon (1987) movie franchise, the last installment of which he was paid $7 million to reprise the role. He headlined the action-hit Predator 2 (1990), although such Schwarzeneggeresque drivel is beneath him, talent-wise.

In addition to his five Emmy nominations, Glover has won the NAACP Image Award five times. Although Glover, like Freeman, is fully capable of playing "color-blind" roles like Raymond Chandler's private eye Philip Marlowe (in the 1995 "Red Wind" episode of Showtime network's "Fallen Angels" (1993) series, for which he received an Emmy nomination), he is committed to articulating the African American experience on-screen and on-stage. In 1994, Glover helped create the Robey Theatre Company of Los Angeles, to bring the black experience to the stage. He has played the great African American abolitionist Frederick Douglass on-stage in Zinn's "Voices of A People's History of the United States," and will reprise the role in "The People Speak", the TV mini-series being made from Zinn's work.

The Venezuelan Congress has approved legislation that provides Glover with $20 million in financing to make two films, one about the great Latin American liberator Simon Bolivar one about Toussaint Louverture, the great rebel general who lead a successful uprising of slaves against France in the late 18th Century and who was only defeated by the chicanery of Napoleon Bonaparte. Congress is closely allied with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who considers Glover a friend.

"The General in His Labyrinth," based on a novel by left-wing novelist Gabriel García Márquez, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, is slated to be directed by Venezuela-born director Alberto Arvelo. "Toussaint" will be directed by Glover himself.

Glover had been acquainted with Chavez for several years, even appearing on Chavez's TV and radio talk show "Hello, President." He is a member of the Advisory Council for the Caracas, Venezuela-based pan-Latin American television network TeleSUR ("Television of the South"), that was launched in 2005. Glover has been criticized by the American media for his friendship with Chavez, particularly after introducing the Venezuelan president at an event in which Chavez characterized President George W. Bush the devil. It likely is an opinion that Glover, a supporter of liberal Democrat John Edwards for the presidency, likely shares.

Widely respected both inside and outside the United States, both as an actor and as a humanitarian, Danny Glover has been an ambassador for the United Nations Development Program since 1998. Glover chairs the board of the TransAfrica Forum, a non-profit, non-governmental organization that is trying to elucidate the economic and political effects of American foreign policy on Africa and among the children of the African Diaspora in the Caribbean Basin and Latin America.

Unveiling the Misperceptions of a Woman's Worth

Simply put, as women we have the tendency to based our worth on the outcomes of our lives. If our careers, relationships, health/wellness, and money is doing well then we feel like we are worth something. However, if anything within our life is shifted out of balance, we begin to question what we did wrong or better yet ask how this could happen to me.

For so long we have identified our worth based on the outcomes of our successes and failures. It is time that we take a look at redefining our worth as women.

How to Feel Worthless
Take every obstacle and failure that you encounter and beat yourself over the head. Continue to remind yourself of how foolish you are for making such a dumb mistake.

Look at yourself in the mirror and reaffirm that you want to change but are afraid that you will automatically fail before you even try.

Scan the room around you and find all of the women who you wish you could be like and start reminding yourself of all your flaws.

Try to be like all of the girls around you. You cannot be yourself as if others perceive you as being successful they will no longer wish to associate with you.

Remind yourself that you do not deserve to be happy. It is your job to make other people happy and not the other way around.

Consequences of attaching to worthlessness:

Inability to internally find what is good about you and hold on to it.

Live in a state of constant failure.

Sabotaging and/or compromising your own happiness in order to "fit in."

Allowing yourself to be a doormat for people to walk on.

Teach your kids how to live their lives in the same manner.

How to Rekindle Your Worth
Reshape your perceptions of situations within your life into "teachable moments."

Ask better questions. Instead of asking yourself "what did I do wrong?" or "why does this always happen to me?", practice looking at yourself in the mirror before you start your day and ask yourself "what am I worth?" or "how may I change my attitude towards this situation or person?"

Another response might be: Although I feel hurt by what was said or done to me, "I wonder what lesson I can take away from this experience?"

Stop holding on to feelings of worthlessness and respond. Holding on to unhealthy perceptions about yourself shuts down your spirit and emotions. Responding helps you "move" into a place of creating a better outlook for your person and situation.

Look at your past experiences as just that, the past. What I have learned is that when I held on to how people perceived how I "should" be, I felt like a complete failure when I could not live up to their expectations. I personally found myself being my worse enemy as I criticized myself to no end. It was not until I shifted my thoughts to my present situation(s) for that specific day that I realized that I had control over my feelings and emotions.

I have a great mentor coach who I work with remind me that "eagles do not fly with pigeons." When you compromise your worth in order to satisfy other people, you compromise your being. However, when you make the conscious decision to change your perception of who you are as an individual, others will take suit and notice.

You have the choice to decide whether or not you want to be enslaved by feelings of worthlessness or experience the freedom of being worthy.

Choose wisely.

A Mother’s Love, a Mother in Crisis - Love Conquers All

A Mother’s Love

A Mother’s love is sent from above;
Created by God to show how it’s done;
It nurtures, it heals, it covers, and it fills;
It possesses and caresses;
Just like the One and Only Begotten Son.
It is unconditional love that is sent from above,
From God our Father who is also a mother.
The closest thing that I have ever seen;
To the real deal of love that is like none other,
Is manifested in God in the person of a Mother!

This poem is taken from my book, “You Are Beautiful” and it was written years ago especially for my mother the late Louise Clark. I wrote this poem to my mother because like many people, I found my mother to be an extraordinary woman. I owe her my life. I don’t say that just because she gave birth to me.

Yes, I appreciate that but what I am referring to is the time when I was caught up in the vicious cycle of addiction for twelve years of my life and how it was my mother who stuck by me and prayed for me. I will never forget how on one occasion when I was locked up in a psychiatric ward in Miami, Florida that she came to visit me and I was completely out of it.

I found out years later that after that initial visit to me she fainted on the way out of the hospital. She kept saying over and over again “I didn’t raise my baby girl to end up like this, God why?” It wasn’t until years later after my recovery and my work through the non-profit organization that I founded over nineteen years ago, Mothers In Crisis, Inc., that my mother was able to answer the question why and to be proud of me! I thank God for allowing my mother to see the positive things that I was able to do through the power of God before she departed.

However, I really wish my mother could have stayed around a little longer in order to read “You Are Beautiful”, and not just because of the poem included and the fact that I dedicated it to her. I believe the book would have really been a blessing to my mother because she always struggled with her perception of how she looked. She was a beautiful woman even at the age of eighty-five. Perfect strangers would tell her how pretty she looked and they always complimented her on her smile. The thing that struck me was that she would come home and tell the stories of how she was praised for her looks by someone and then say something like, “I don’t know why they said that.” Or “They were just saying something.”

When she said things like that I would immediately gently rebuke her and say, “They said it because it’s true”. She would then smile but I knew deep down she didn’t believe that she was beautiful or deserving of the compliments.

You see my mother was from the deep south. She grew up in a small town in North Florida (Freeport), and then she moved even deeper south to the Mississippi Delta. Her grandfather was a slave and she grew up in that era where people believed that “white was right” but “black get back”. The ideal beauty for African Americans was the lighter the skin with long flowing hair, the better. They had such things as the paper bag test, if you were darker than a paper bag, then you were considered too black and ugly.

Many black women including my mother grew up with a self-loathing that in many cases they passed down to their children, especially the girls. One of the reasons that I rebelled so hard against my mother and started using drugs was because inside of me I knew that to be a lie. I wasn’t affirmed as a beautiful child because I was darker than the rest of my siblings and my hair was quite kinky growing up and on top of that I was tender headed!

My mother lived through the Civil Rights Era and the time when blacks began to shout “Say it Loud, I’m Black and I am Proud!” She died right before the election of our first black president, Barack Obama. Through it all, she still did not know that she was beautiful not just because of how she looked on the outside but because of the God on the inside of her who manifested His glory so wonderfully through my mother.

I am however comforted by the fact that through my book, “You Are Beautiful”, my daughter, granddaughter, and women of all ages will have a chance to know where their true beauty comes from and realize that by the grace and glory of God, they are Beautiful!

CBN.com – Jada Collins is the commentator and spokesmodel for Ebony fashion fair – the world’s largest traveling fashion show. She’s also one of the faces of fashion fair cosmetics.

Collins’ has walked over a thousand runways from LA to Paris to Rome wearing the fashions of the world’s top designers. And her photos have appeared in hundreds of magazines.

Jada Collins has undeniable beauty – both inside and out. But there was a time when she didn’t like what she saw in the mirror. It all started with the cutting words of her alcoholic father.

"It was just a few words, but those words disabled me, literally. It’s a fear of not having security. It’s a fear of what people think about me. It’s a fear of, you know, 'Dad, why don’t you love me?' "

Jada and her younger sister watched their father beat their mother.

"I’ve seen my dad stomp her and punch her and kick her and, you know, I’ve seen lots of things happen and I always said, 'Well, you know, that’s never going to happen to me. I’m never going to let that happen to me.' And there was a deep sadness of grief for my mom."

Then there was the day when Jada, her mom, and sister came home from a vacation – and found their house empty. Jada’s dad had moved out and he’d taken everything with him.

Jada moved closer to her grandparents and began going to church. It was the unique bond with her grandfather that changed the way Jada saw herself. One day, she was looking through a stack of magazines.

"I just remember my grandfather who I love to death. He told me, 'You know, you would be the prettiest little model.' And that just opened the door. It was like this light at the end of the tunnel that gave me a little hope, that said, 'You know what? I have something to reach for.'

As Jada grew into her teens, those positive words fueled a passion in her to rise above her father’s hurtful words. She studied models - their look, their attitude, and their walk. By age 14, she was strikingly beautiful – and five feet, 11 inches tall.

"That was horrible. That was absolutely horrible. But now I look back at it and go, 'Thank God for 5’ 11.' But, back then I was teased so much and even all of the girls that I work with now, we have the same story. I don’t know what it is about a giraffe, but everybody wants – whoever’s tall," she admits.

Jada eventually landed modeling jobs in her senior year in high school. Seven years later, she moved to California and trained with supermodel, Christy Turlington.

"I’m breaking in and I’m like, 'This is just phenomenal.' In being trained together and walking together, I developed this fierce walk," Jada remembers.

Jada set her sights on becoming a supermodel. She was picked from thousands of entrants to become an Ebony fashion fair model. Her first thoughts?

"I’m going to be a part of history. I’m going to be a part of African American history as being one of the Ebony fashion fair models," she thought.

Jada loved every minute of her new opportunity. She modeled in 180 cites worldwide. The camera flashed and the audience’s reactions seemed to reach out to validate her as she walked the runways. But, when the show was over and the lights went out, Jada’s insecurities came to the surface. Self-esteem became such a huge issue.

"It was like everything was riding on the fact of, 'What do I look like?' You know? I mean, I was schizophrenic. It’s a place of totally thinking if another pretty woman comes around it’s like, 'Is my job in jeopardy?' We’re constantly in competition."

Jada’s life as a model caused her to drift away from her Christian values. A sweet-talking man lured her even further away…

"This person was telling me that I’m wonderful, telling me that I’m gorgeous, telling me all these wonderful things, and so I just kind of stepped away from everything that I believed at that point, and moved in with him. I was shackin’ at this point and living a life that really was not pleasing to God," she says.

Two years later, Jada found out her boyfriend was sleeping with another woman. She ended the relationship and re-committed her life to Christ – with these words: 'Lord, I’m sorry. I’ve made some mistakes again. Please take me back. And this time, I’m not turning back.'

Jada learned about God’s forgiveness and began to read the Bible. She forgave those in her past who had hurt her – especially her father.

"I stepped out on faith. I called my dad. We talked and we got some things hashed out. I understand why he did some of the things he did," Jada says.

With the words I’m sorry and I forgive you, Jada was able to walk away from years of bitterness and unforgiveness.

"I am a prayer warrior. I don’t care what I’m going through. Even when I’m on stage, I’m saying, 'Lord, I just praise you. I bless you. I give you praise, glory and honor for deliverance.' "

I n 2003, Jada married gospel artist and minister, Ernest Collins Jr. And she’s written a book called, Be-u-ti-ful, which speaks to women about overcoming their past – and becoming all God has called them to be. She continues on as an Ebony fashion fair commentator and supermodel.

"My career has been spectacular. And I’m sitting here now and I’m saying to myself, 'Thank you Lord, thank you.' Because it couldn’t have gotten any better for me," she says. "I just know that God reigns and He is faithful, and He’s my King

What Is Beauty?

The question of beauty has been debated throughout the ages. It is timeless in its ability to generate heated discussions with passionate feelings. Beauty according to Webster’s Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary is the quality that is present in a thing or person giving intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind; an attractive, well formed girl or woman; a beautiful thing, as a work of art, building, etc.

In Psalms 139:13-14 the Bible states, For you created my inmost being, you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. (NIV) Wonderfully is the Hebrew word, palah / paw· law and it means to be distinct, marked out, be separated, be distinguished. God made us to be different and that is where the beauty lies.

There is no one else exactly like you on planet earth. When God made you He broke the mold.

That’s the essence of your beauty, your uniqueness! God didn’t create you to imitate others. He created you to be one of a kind, distinctively you. There is no one size fits all in beauty. That’s why I say to you right now, you are beautiful! No matter your race, size, hair color, hair length, the color of your skin, shape, age, or what you are wearing. You are beautiful because God made you and He doesn’t make junk. Society’s stereotypical thinking has created an unrealistic idea of beauty to sell products. Too many people have bought the lies and sold them to our children throughout the generations. Countless women have self-hatred because of the lies about beauty. They really believe that they are ugly or somehow don’t measure up.

There are three clichés surrounding beauty; beauty is as beauty does, beauty is only skin deep, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder that I would like to briefly explore.

1. Beauty is as beauty does is a saying that has been passed down for many generations. God beautifies based upon our disposition which affects our actions. A humble or lowly attitude will cause God to pour out His glory and thus make you truly beautiful no matter what your outer appearance may be. Another way that beauty is as beauty does is based upon good works. Mother Theresa was an example of someone who purposefully lived a life of strict moderation due to a vow of poverty. The pictures that we see of her are by no stretch of the imagination glamorous but those familiar with Mother Theresa’s unselfish work in Calcutta, India with extremely poor lepers and the establishment of leper colonies all over the world, will have to agree that her good works made her a beautiful person and so can yours.

2. Beauty is only skin deep is a saying that I believe gets to the heart of where beauty comes from. It implies that for some beauty begins with the outward appearance and stays there. Beauty that is only skin deep is not beauty at all. Because if all you have is a pretty face, hair, body, or clothes then that is all surface with no depth. That kind of beauty fades with age and life circumstances. That is why women are getting cosmetic plastic surgery at increasingly younger ages. There are talk shows depicting girls as young as seventeen years of age desiring and oftentimes getting plastic surgery to change their appearance to avoid the aging process. The truth of the matter is the exact opposite, beauty is not only skin deep. True beauty comes from within and is seen outwardly.

3. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder simply means that the one looking at the object determines whether the thing is beautiful or not. Therefore two people can look at the same thing and one can see beauty and the other can see ugliness. There are some things that are said to be universally beautiful. Sunrises and sunsets, mountains and oceans, flowers and other views of nature are a few things that we generally agree are breathtakingly beautiful. We often agree that most babies and some baby animals are beautiful. When it comes to people there are varying opinions about beauty and the saying, beauty is in the eye of the beholder rings very true. We come to understand basically that beauty is subjective and therefore it is based upon the viewer’s perceptions, beliefs, and concepts of what beauty is. This is powerful because when we realize beauty is subjective we understand that we don’t have to try and fit into a certain mold or type of beauty that is set by society. We can embrace our uniqueness and experience beauty on a whole different level when we aren’t trying to be beautiful to everyone and everything. Although you may not be beautiful to everyone you can rest assured that you are beautiful to God! As we walk in that revelation and really believe it, we will become beautiful to ourselves and others will see our beauty as well.

In His presence the connection is made that lights the temple and lets up the shade; but this is also the place where the Glory of God outshines every other light.

Ageless Beauty

There are however characteristics and qualities that you can acquire and adopt that will make and keep you beautiful no matter what age you are.

I would like to explore five: Wonder, Kindness, Humor, Love and Godliness. Whenever you possess these characteristics and qualities you are beautiful from the inside out; and it doesn’t matter if you are one or one hundred and one, you are beautiful!

1. Wonder is a quality that we see in babies and young children as they are growing and experiencing life outside the womb for the first time. I have a granddaughter, Tayla who amazes me every day as I watch her grow and explore everything with wide eyes and a ready smile. She is so beautiful! Not just her physical attributes, but her zest for life. She can go back to the same thing that fascinates her over and over again and touch, feel, and ultimately attempt to eat the object of her interest. She was born with inherent wonder. To a certain extent, some more than others, we all are. We are born with an instinct to explore and to learn and everything is a wonder. As we grow older, our experiences teach us to become more and more closed to the world around us. We can sometimes get a cynical attitude that says, been there, done that, and bought the t-shirt. Even as Disciples of Christ, we can become immune to the things of God. We get desensitized by Hollywood movies and we look for the spectacular to equate with the supernatural and it becomes harder and harder to be open to the everyday wonders of God. Wonder is however a quality that we should never lose no matter what age. Wonder looks beautiful when it is genuine. When you are genuinely surprised and amazed with the freshness of life in the Holy Spirit it causes your eyes to sparkle and it produces a childlike expression that is beautiful indeed!

2. Kindness is a beautiful quality that looks good on anyone. When you look into kind eyes and a kind expression especially when you are in need of some type of assistance or if you have just had a rough day, it really makes the person wearing kindness look very beautiful. Kindness is essentially having a sympathetic or helpful nature and being affectionate, loving, forbearing, and gentle. You can tell the truth and still be kind. It is not what you say but the words you choose to use to say it and therefore how you say it. The Bible states that our words should be seasoned with salt and full of grace (Colossians 4:6). Ultimately kindness is seen by our actions. It’s not just words. It is doing good things for others when we have the opportunity. It is going that extra mile and not complaining. To be kind is to be beautiful no matter how old you are!

3. Humor- The most important thing that one can do in order to remain beautiful is to laugh. A good sense of humor will make up for bad hair days, pimples, and bloating, that is if you don’t take yourself too seriously. When you don’t look or feel your best look for the humor in your situation. Sometimes just looking in the mirror and seeing how silly you look will cause you to laugh at yourself! It is good to be able to laugh and create laughter in others. That is a beautiful quality especially in today’s world with so much bad news and depressing things going on. In order to have humor, you must look for it. Look for the absurd in everyday life and laugh. Point it out to others so they can laugh as well. Be able to laugh at yourself but don’t make a practice of laughing at others. Laugh with others. There is a saying that says laugh and the whole world will laugh with you.

4. Love- The true essence of love is beautiful. The one who loves and the object of the one loving are both made beautiful by love. The Bible states that God is love. (I John 4:8) [agape /ag·ah·pay/] is the Greek word used for love in the referenced scripture and it means brotherly love, affection, good will, love, benevolence. It is the God kind of love that is unconditional. It is not dependent upon the one being loved but it is dependent upon the one loving. The scripture (John 3:16) states, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.(KJV) We realize that it wasn’t about the world so much as it was about God. God’s love is what caused Him to give His only begotten son, Jesus, not the world. When you love as God loves, you realize that the love is coming forth from you not based upon what the other person does or doesn’t do, but it is based upon the love that is on the inside of you. You cannot fall out of unconditional love because you don’t fall into it. You make a choice to love and a choice to continue loving. That’s the beauty of love. That is why there is no greater force than love.

5. Godliness- To be godly essentially means to be and act like God. We can look all around at God’s creation and see beauty. We can look at one another and see beauty exuding from the eyes and hearts of our fellowmen. The Bible states that we are created in the image of God. (Genesis 1:26-27) So if the image is beautiful then we know that the genuine article, God, is exceedingly beautiful and therefore to be godly is to be beautiful. God is holy and we as believers in Christ are admonished to be holy as He is holy (I Peter 1:16) for without holiness no one shall see God. (Hebrews 12:14) To be godly is to be holy. There is so much godlessness that is perpetuated in our society among young and old alike until the quality of godliness is almost an extinct concept. Living godly is such a commodity these days until it automatically causes one to stand out and be noticed. It produces a sweet beauty that is unparalleled to any of the vulgar and filthy images of beauty that are masquerading for the real thing.

I Am The Joy!!

When I look into the mirror, tell me what do I see?

The reflection of the Glory, staring back at me!

The essence of Christ is who I see;

And I realize that it is no longer me but we.

For I am the Joy that was set before my Lord;

As He hung, bled, and died on the cross-for my sins;

Creation cried and thought it was the end.

But today, I know that it didn’t end, but begin.

For I am the Joy!

As I go throughout my day burdened by the weight of the world;

I stop and realize, as I look into His eyes, that I am the Joy!

I am the one that He saw and decided to stay on that cross so that I wouldn’t be lost.

I am the Joy and because I am, I can laugh and not cry; smile and not frown; live and not die!

I can continue to try and try to reach the goal of my soul being with my Savior.

Every day it carries me along the way; just to know that I am the Joy!

TEARS

As I sat in my usual morning spot deep in the woods, meditating upon the Lord,
I prayed for my brothers and sisters.
The longer I prayed, the deeper my burden became.

Gradually, tears began to roll down my face.
My eyes were swollen shut as I cried in a loud voice unto the Lord.
My tears engulfed me. They surrounded me in prayer.

Only it was not just my tears for it had started to rain very hard.

The rain was icy cold when it hit my face and mingled with my tears.

A tiny vapor of steam arose and evaporated.

Hard and steady was the rain. Heavy and loud was my cry.

Refreshing yet sad; cleansing yet sorrowful was the Rain as it poured.

The Lord is a compassionate God. He hears our cries and feels our hurts.
He mourns when we mourn and He will lift us up and place us where
He would have us to be.

Trust in the Lord thy God always.

That morning the Lord and I cried.

Look through the door of Infinity and see, Destiny is Calling;

Smell the wind as it tickles your nose and blows open the door;

Walk into the place where time and space ceases to be, Destiny is waiting patiently;

Water falls and engulfs the air, cries of laughter are everywhere.

Singing and dancing, walking and prancing,

“Live life to the fullest” Destiny is saying,

“No time for worry doubt or fear, it’s time for love and living here!”

Hours pass that seem like minutes floating on a cloud,

Time is spent and the sun is no more,

Hesitantly I walk back through the door of Infinity.

I glance back as Destiny winks and blows a kiss;

With tears and a smile, I know I will miss this place!

Destiny is Calling, can’t you hear?

Walk into the place where time and space ceases to be, Destiny is waiting patiently!!

Hope is found in the Birds that Sing, in the Grass as it Grows,

In the Smell of a Rose, in the Dew as it settles upon the Ground.

Hope can be found in the middle of Pain, in the Streets of Frustration,

And in the Home of the Name that is above every Name!

Hope is found when you Hear the Name, Think the Name, or Say the Name,

It’s all the Same!

There is a Quaking going on if I'm not mistaken everything around is being Shaken!
People are losing homes right and left;
Banking institutions are crumbling fast;
Gas prices are up and down and Wall Street crashed, job security is a thing of the past!
There is a Quaking going on if I'm not mistaken everything around is being Shaken!
Husbands and are wives on the split;
War is going on endlessly;
Teenagers are having sex recklessly;
People are wondering how this could be;
Living in the 21sr Century, it was suppose to be about Unity;
Instead we spent time acquiring things;
Houses, cars, and diamond rings;
We just wanted to be living large;
The only problem is who’s in charge!

What we really didn't know is that it is the creditors that we owe;

Now this whole thing is about to blow, like a big fat fiery Volcano!

There is a Quaking going on if I'm not mistaken everything around is being Shaken!

Things that cannot be shaken are holding on;

The Kingdom of God is still growing strong!

The sound of the train as it goes across the tracks, the sounds sirens screeching in the distance, even the sound of thunder and lightening cannot stop the voices of those crying out for help…I hear the voices of the children, women, and men asking for assistance in my head…the voices of the people running scared.
I put my hand over my ears and close my eyes, to my surprise instead of cherries blossoming or magnolias blooming or pearls and laces, I see the faces of homeless children, women abused, men laid off, people on drugs looking for love but getting slapped instead….
I speak the mantra “As long as there is breath in your body, there is hope!” over and over again, “As long as there is breath in your body, there is hope!” “As long as there is breath in your body, there is hope!”
Hope appears when I open my eyes and see, you, yes you, coming together to grow and to know. Now the voices are quieted and I hear the sound of Cleansing Rain and wind blowing in a fresh new day.

The time has come and the time is now.

You have been looking and searching because you didn’t know how,

You were going to make it, you just couldn’t take it.
The trials and tribulations of life got you down.
It got so bad until you thought you would drown, in your own blood,
But like a flood, the Spirit lifted up a standard and brought you through it.
Although you couldn’t see it you made it to it,
The place of Destiny, you heard the call and had to Dream Again after the fall,
Because after all you believed inside, that you are more than your problems, and you are more than your pain, you are much more than that, but all the same;
You had to know and do the Father’s will because that is the way that Destiny is fulfilled!
Who you are is whom you shall be, your purpose in life lies within.
Deep inside you see you can win, because greatness is there, and that is who you are.
When you trust in Jesus then you can go far, high above the clouds and sit upon a star,
And look down over your problems and say, Peace be Still,

Because from where I’m sitting, Destiny is Fulfilled!

I grabbed the Wind in the palm of my hand;

I made a fist and held it real tight;

I kept it that way for most of the night;

Curiosity got the best of me;

And I decided to take a peek and see;

What the Wind looked like as it sat in my hand;

I opened my hand very slowly, one finger at a time;

I looked for the wind, but the Wind I couldn’t find;

For as I opened my hand the wind fled, Woosh, to the sky;

It left my grasp in the blink of an eye;

I didn’t mind you see because I came to understand that not many people could honestly say I held the Wind in the palm of my hand!

The power that I felt for that brief moment made me cry;

To think that I, a mere mortal could grab the Wind!

I had a dream last night but it didn’t last long;
In the dream I was singing a song,
About how in life things can go wrong;
But even then there is a chance to go on.

I had a dream last night about what love looked like,
And in the dream I thought about the plight of men and women
Caught up in a daze, purple haze, eyes all glazed, looking half crazed,
Walking and wandering through life un-phased by all of the chaos and sin all around, looking for love in a world turned up side down.

I had a dream last night but something had changed
The tables had turned and inside my head burned with the awareness and knowledge that life is for living and love is for loving and songs are for singing and in the midst of it all my alarm clock started ringing.
I arose from my bed, shook my head, and thought about the things that I had reaped, and then it dawned on me that I wasn’t really asleep!

For the first time in my life my eyes were wide opened and I was aware and awake to the things that make life worth living and time worth giving to the things that bring release and offer peace.

So whether awake or asleep, dream of a life filled with songs for the soul and love that makes whole whatever is broken.
Dream of hope and joy for better days ahead;
And when you dream get out of your bed and bring to reality the things that were said!

God has your back and though a righteous man fall down seven times the Lord will raise him up! I have had many pitfalls, downfalls, and faithfalls but I can honestly say that the Lord is faithful and He will restore! Restoration is a process whereby God Almighty will place you back into the place you were before you fell and not only that, He will give you Double for your Trouble like He did for Job in the Bible!!
